Hilary or Hillary is a given and family name, derived from the Latin hilarius meaning "cheerful", from hilaris, "cheerful, merry" which comes from the Greek ἱλαÏός (hilaros), "cheerful, merry", which in turn comes from ἵλαος (hilaos), "propitious, gracious".
