Etymologically, it is an erroneous form, based on the Scottish Gaelic vocative form a Mhà iri (pronounced [əˈvaËɾʲɪ]), from the nominative Mà iri [maËɾʲɪ]. In Scottish English it is usually pronounced [vaËrɪ].
